Crochet Mug Sweater

Tutorial

My stepmom had the same cute green mug sweater on her everyday coffee mug for years. She and I knew as soon as we saw this beautiful gradient yarn at Michaels, it was time for a new one!

Materials:

Size 4 yarn of your choosing. The yarn I used is Loops & Threads Facets Urban Sky.

Size H 5mm crochet hook

Button

Sewing needle

Thread

Scissors

Stitches: U.S. Terms

Slip knot

Ch - chain stitch

Sc - single crochet

Sl st - slip stitch

Sc inc - single crochet increase

Sc dec - single crochet decrease

Instructions:

We will begin the mug sweater from the button hole and crochet a triangle. This video tutorial walks you through how to crochet a triangle (rows 1-16).

Create a slip knot on your hook

Row 1: Ch 10, sl st into first ch to create a loop, sc inc in same stitch, turn (2)

You may want to do more or less beginning chains depending on how big a button you're using.

You can ch 1 and turn after each row if you prefer. I don’t ch 1 when I’m working with sc because I find that it’s not necessary and just creates gaps in my work.

Row 2: sc across, turn (2)

Row 3: sc inc in both st, turn (4)

Row 4: sc across, turn (4)

Every other row will have increases.

{Row 5: sc inc in first st, sc in middle st, sc inc in last st, turn (6)

Row 6: sc across, turn (6) } repeat until the project is the desired width for your mug. I worked until my sweater was 16 sc in width

Row 17: sc across, turn (16) Repeat until the project can wrap around your mug

Row 26: sc dec in first 2 st, sc in middle st, sc dec in last 2 st, turn (14) Repeat until the end of the project sits nicely under the mug handle and looks good tucked under the beginning of the sweater (see image below).

Tie off and weave in your ends.

Wrap your mug sweater around your mug to figure out where you want the button to be then sew your button on. Ta da!!
